THE PROBLEM
All woodworm eat timber in the larval stage of their lifecycle (for 3 -15 yrs depending on species). They generate bore dust and leave behind a hole the size and shape of which varies according to species. The tunnels they form within the wood weaken the timber to a level where it can be structurally dangerous.
The main types of beetle are Common Furniture Beetle, Death Watch Beetle, Weevil, and House Longhorn and each prefers a different sort of timber. Elan Dampcoursing estimators are fully trained to identify which insect is present, whether it is active or inactive and to recommend an appropriate treatment - certain insect attacks do not need treatment.
THE SOLUTION
Elan Dampcoursing use the safest (lowest toxicity) chemicals to kill the insect in all its stages (egg, larva, pupa and beetle). Heartwood and hardwood are more difficult for chemicals to penetrate than sapwood and softwood but appropriate specifications will be used. Heavily infested timbers will probably need replacing by our craftsmen joiners.
We constantly review the treatments available to ensure that only the best products are presented to our customers. We are currently recommending the use of a Permethrin-based insecticidal fluid, a Dual Purpose insectide and fungicide (both of which are water-based), and a deep penetrating Wood Paste Preservative designed for heavier structural timbers. All materials have extremely low hazard ratings. However, we may consider other products in specific situations.
